Poplar Grove Plantation, one of the oldest existing peanut plantations in North Carolina, is listed on the National Register of Historic Homes and preserved in the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust. It is located five minutes north of Wilmington on US Highway 17 North and is well worth the visit.

The facility, preserved through the efforts of the non-profit Poplar Grove Foundation, opened as a museum in 1980.

The homestead and outbuildings are intact and crafts such as blacksmithing and basket weaving are demonstrated during the year.

Poplar Grove hosts a Farmers Market each Wednesday featuring fruits, vegetables, plants, and pottery grown and made in North Carolina. From eight a.m. to one p.m. visitors will be able not only to buy all types of products from local crafters. It is open from mid-April through the end of October each year.

One of the events that takes place at Poplar Grove Plantation in July each year, the Classy-Chassis Car Show and Country Flea Market, earned distinction as a top 20 event by the Southeast Tourism Society. Another event that takes place annually is the Poplar Grove Herb and Garden Fair. It is held the final weekend in March, giving gardeners the perfect opportunity to purchase cool weather vegetables. Healthy plants and seedlings are available in abundance, which gives gardeners wonderful choices, all sourced from local growers.

Be sure to attend Poplar Grove Plantation at Christmas to see the traditional displays; the manor house is especially beautiful then. Candlelight Tours of the Manor House take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings for the first three weekends in December.

Poplar Grove also has become a sought after wedding and special events location.
