The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher shows many of the ways that water impacts life in this area. Indeed, water has played perhaps the pivotal role in the Wilmington area’s history, development, and continuing growth. We are fortunate that we live in an area where water of all types exists in abundance.

From our spectacular sandy beaches on the Atlantic Ocean to the relatively tranquil Intracoastal Waterway to the majestic Cape Fear River to the lakes and ponds that are ubiquitous in Southeastern North Carolina, we live, work, play, fish, swim, surf, snorkel and relax in close proximity to the water.

There are a number of ways to gain an understanding of the role water plays in our economy.

A good place to begin is to see what can be found in historic downtown Wilmington.

Earlier this year, Cape Fear Riverboats welcomed its newest boat, Henrietta, to its fleet. Built in 1985, this two-deck boat joins Cape Fear Riverboats’ other two vessels, Captain J.N. Maffitt and Jacob’s Run, as part of downtown Wilmington’s longest continuously running boat tour.

Wilmington Symphony Orchestra Musical Beginnings

When violinist Gaile Zack and her family moved to Wilmington in 1971, she couldn’t find a home for her music. Having played in community orchestras in Arkansas, Florida and Tennessee, Zack quickly realized that although Wilmington had many community offerings, live classical music wasn’t one of them.
