Elderhaus

Elderhaus PACE (Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) celebrated its 10th year this April. The program is designed to be a ‘nursing home without walls’ and was the first of eleven PACE programs in North Carolina. Reimbursed by Medicare and Medicaid to keep seniors in their homes and communities, PACE provides physical therapy, occupational therapy, prescriptions, homecare, and specialist visits based upon need.
The unique approach of PACE offers seniors the opportunity to receive comprehensive coordinated care that can cover everything from medication to counseling, and other imperative services for the aging adult. Elderhaus PACE provides transportation both to and from their day center (open Monday-Friday) where participants are monitored by our physician, nurses, nurse aides, and social workers (with a medical clinic housed in our day center). A person-centered plan of care is crafted for each participant that serves as a point of reference in directing the care of our seniors.
PACE participants receive care in the day center as frequently as 5 days a week or as seldom as once a month based on need. Outside of center hours, PACE employs a 24-hour on-call service so participants and caregivers can always speak with a nurse for emergent concerns.
In addition to medical care, our staff is proactive in offering a variety of recreational activity to keep seniors engaged. The Activities Coordinator, Activities Aide, and volunteers coordinate choir performances, painting classes, seated yoga, guided meditation, and monthly field trips. PACE is always looking for a robust volunteer and internship program to offer seniors meaningful socialization. Elderhaus PACE serves New Hanover, Northern Brunswick County, and Hampstead in Pender County.
Southeastern North Carolina has a full complement of support groups and civic health organizations, too. Each county has a governmental department that acts as a resource for seniors and can help locate needed services such as Meals on Wheels and transportation for medical appointments. They are: the New Hanover County Department of Aging, in Wilmington, Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc., in Bolivia, and Pender Adult Services in Burgaw.
