Who’s Who: Monica M. Pierpan, D.D.S., Owner of Pierpan Dentistry in Hampstead and Jacksonville
For more than two decades, Dr. Monica M. Pierpan and her husband, Dr. Henry Pierpan, have provided dental care in southeastern North Carolina. They welcome patients to offices in Jacksonville and Hampstead. Dr. Monica Pierpan did her undergraduate biology studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and received her D.D.S. degree in 1994 from UNC School of Dentistry in Chapel Hill. After moving to Wilmington and practicing in Wrightsville Beach and Elizabethtown, she opened Pierpan Dentistry in Hampstead in 1995. Dr. Pierpan is a member of the Port City Study Club, which is committed to dental excellence in all areas. Drs. Henry and Monica are both members of the American Dental Association, Tri-County Dental Society and the N.C. Dental Society. They live in Scott’s Hill with their two sons and two dogs.
WT: Where are you from?
I was raised in Seminole, Florida.
WT: How did you end up in Wilmington?
While attending UNC Chapel Hill, we liked to visit the coast. We loved the Wilmington area and beaches and would come for camping and scuba diving and enjoying the ocean.
WT: What is your favorite part of living in the area?
Being near the ocean. Our whole family (me, my husband and two sons) love boating, kayaking, SUPing and scuba diving and just beach time with each other and our dogs. The barrier islands are so amazing around here and not crowded like where I grew up in Florida.
WT: What is your average workday like?
I arrive at office about 7 am for business stuff (payroll, bills, etc.) After a morning huddle with the team, I treat patients from 8 am to 5 pm, which includes all aspects of dentistry, so no two days are alike. I finish about 6 pm after meeting with the office manager.
WT: What do you enjoy most about your job?
I really enjoy the interaction with patients and the relationships I have formed over the 25 years of practice. The patients (and my team members) have become family to me. I love seeing them and catching up on their lives, and when I can help them with their dental needs and make them happy and comfortable, that is a really good feeling.
WT: What is the most difficult part of your job?
Dealing with insurance companies who do not have the patients’ best interests in mind. Dental insurance really needs a complete overhaul, but it hasn’t been done in 30+ years.
WT: What has working at Pierpan Dentistry done for you?
It has allowed me to work with some of the best people I know, our staff of administrators, hygienists and assistants are the most fun, loving, compassionate and goofy people I know. They have truly made my days as a dentist rewarding. I would not be a successful dentist without this team of women.
WT: Do you have any future goals for the company?
We had the goal and dream for many years while working in our original small location in Hampstead (which we opened in 1995) to someday build our own building and have more space to offer services to the community of Hampstead. After many years of designing and planning, we saw that dream come true when we moved into our beautiful new office in August 2019. So now our goal is to make this office the best office we can, still keeping all of our state-of-the-art technology while having a more comfortable and welcoming environment for our patients.
WT: What’s your favorite quote or mantra?
“In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”
