How Yoga Transformed an Art Gallery

New Elements Gallery in Wilmington blends art and wellness with pay-as-you-can yoga, curated exhibits, and community-focused programming in a mindful space.

Miriam, owner of New Elements Gallery on Front Street in downtown Wilmington, discovered a powerful intersection between art and wellness—one that’s reshaping her business and building community. What began as a personal health journey has evolved into a unique model that brings together art lovers and wellness seekers in a thoughtfully curated gallery setting.

A Wilmington Journey from Health Scare to Holistic Vision Three years ago, elevated blood pressure and high sugar levels prompted a simple, repeated question at doctor visits: do you meditate? That nudge led Miriam to explore yoga and, ultimately, to complete her 200-hour yoga teacher certification this summer—often balancing all-day training with gallery openings. The result is a renewed sense of purpose and presence that now informs how she curates exhibitions, supports artists, and serves the Wilmington community.

Local Roots: Training and Community Service Miriam trained with respected local instructors Brian Luce and Jackie DeConti at Terra Sol studio and completed a Seva (service) project by hosting a free yoga class at New Elements Gallery. Curator Georgie Anastasi redesigned the back gallery space around artist Jean Gray Mohs’ work specifically for the event, a format that has continued with other artists and shows how intentional design can support both movement and mindfulness.

Pay-As-You-Can Yoga at New Elements Gallery Today, New Elements Gallery offers ongoing pay-as-you-can yoga classes throughout the year.

The approach:
• Expands accessibility to wellness for the Wilmington community
• Creates a welcoming, intimate experience beyond traditional gallery openings
• Provides a fresh revenue stream for the gallery while elevating artists’ exposure
• Invites new audiences to discover local artwork in a reflective, embodied way

Business Impact and Community Building Integrating yoga into the gallery has strengthened resilience in day-to-day operations, deepened appreciation for the artwork on view, and widened community connections. The model brings new faces into the space, fosters meaningful conversations, and supports a more mindful experience of art. It also reflects a broader trend: Wilmington businesses are innovating by integrating wellness, creativity, and community impact.

Designed Spaces, Immersive Experiences The back gallery now doubles as a serene practice area—with shows curated to complement a calming, contemplative atmosphere. Sessions take place surrounded by contemporary works, offering a rare opportunity to slow down, breathe, and engage with art on a deeper level. Visual highlights include yoga among rotating exhibitions, before-and-after space transformations, and the gallery owner leading practice in the same space where she curates.
