Explore the Legacy of NC’s Black Patriots

Explore “Forgotten Heroes” at Battleship North Carolina on Feb. 24, honoring Black Revolutionary War patriots from NC with Q&A and tickets.

The Battleship North Carolina Memorial in Wilmington will host a special America 250 (A250) educational program this winter, inviting the community to learn more about Black North Carolinians who served during the American War for Independence—stories that have too often been overlooked.

Scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 24, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., the program will highlight the legacy of Black and multiracial soldiers from North Carolina, including several with ties to the Wilmington area.

Honoring often-forgotten Revolutionary War service

During the Revolutionary War, more than 400 Black and multiracial soldiers from North Carolina served in military roles. Their courage helped shape the nation’s founding—even as freedom and full citizenship were not yet recognized for many of the people who fought for independence.

As the country approaches the 250th anniversary of American independence, the Battleship North Carolina Memorial is using its A250 initiatives to help share a fuller, more inclusive history.

Program topic and speaker

Titled “Forgotten Heroes: Remembering North Carolina’s Black Patriots of the Revolutionary War,” the presentation will be led by Trevor Freeman, Museum Educator. The evening will also include a Q&A session, giving attendees the chance to ask questions and explore the topic in greater depth.

“This program is a vital part of our mission to educate and share the full story of America’s fight for freedom,” said Dr. Jay C. Martin, Executive Director of the Battleship North Carolina Memorial. “By highlighting the Black patriots with ties to North Carolina, we honor their courage and ensure their contributions are remembered as we commemorate 250 years of American independence.”
