Enjoy an Active Lifestyle as a Resident of the Wilmington Area
The Wilmington area is the ideal location to enjoy an active lifestyle. Our mild, coastal climate allows for outdoor activity year-round and our area’s natural features like its beaches and waterways make it easy to enjoy a number of activities like kayaking, surfing and stand-up paddleboarding.
Area Sporting Events
The Wilmington area is well-known for its sports tourism and is host to many large-scale sporting events like the Beach to Battleship Triathlon as well as a number of area marathons and 5K races. At the coast, the area sees many visitors each year to witness surf competitions like the O’Neill Sweetwater Pro-Am, which is one of the largest surf competitions on the East Coast. The area’s many tidal marshes and the Intracoastal Waterway make it ideal for stand-up paddleboarding and, each year since 2011, Wrightsville Beach has hosted the Carolina Cup Stand-up Paddleboard race. This past summer, Carolina Beach was a tour stop location for the EVP Beach Volleyball Tour.
Pickleball
Pickleball, a combination of tennis, badminton and ping-pong, is quickly becoming one of the Southeast’s most popular sports. In the Wilmington area, pickleball’s growing popularity can be attributed to the efforts of Brunswick Forest residents in promoting the game. Brunswick Forest’s developer saw pickleball being played in a community in Florida and introduced it to a few residents who quickly became enamored with the game. The community started a Pickleball Club which now has more than 300 members. A pickleball league was formed this past summer, and, recently, new pickleball courts were opened within Brunswick Forest to help accommodate the growing number of players.
Staying Active at the Coast
The Wilmington area’s many waterways make it easy to enjoy water sports like kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, fishing, boating, surfing and more. Each body of water offers its own unique experience, depending on the sport that you are interested in. Quiet tidal marshes provide a relaxed outing for kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding, while more adventurous participants may prefer taking their stand-up paddleboard out in the ocean for a more challenging experience. Both freshwater and saltwater fishing is abundant in coastal North Carolina and many companies offer fishing charters to provide opportunities for deep-sea fishing.
Your Active Lifestyle Awaits
Take advantage of the Wilmington’s area’s relaxed, yet active lifestyle when you choose to relocate. Whether you enjoy water sports, golfing, tennis, pickleball or just love to get out and walk, you will have ample opportunity to do so as a resident of this area.
