Wilmington-based Makai Events Co. gives people a place to connect, celebrate and make memories, all while taking the stress out of planning.  

When you meet Mandy Byrum and Shea Ellis, the team behind Makai Events Co., it is clear that hosting is not just what they do, it’s who they are. Their passion for building community shines through every event, and living in Wilmington has only deepened that drive.  

The idea for Makai Events started, fittingly, with a girls’ night. That evening, they discovered a shared love for bringing people together and making celebrations feel thoughtful and memorable. 

Although Makai Events officially launched in March 2024, the seeds were planted much earlier.

Mandy moved to Wilmington from Hawaii about a year and a half ago, bringing with her years of event planning experience and a dream of starting her own business.  

Shea, who made the move to Wilmington from New Hampshire three years ago, discovered her own love for organizing events while helping plan her sister’s wedding.

When the two crossed paths, they hit it off right away and saw a chance to bring something fresh and exciting to Wilmington. 

Hosting is truly at the heart of Makai Events. Living in a creative, entrepreneurial community like Wilmington keeps Mandy and Shea inspired and shapes their approach to every gathering.  

Their favorite things about Makai Events are getting to support the local businesses and putting together events that help people connect — whether that’s a casual coffee meetup or a community market.

Makai Events focuses is on “collecting moments,” paying attention to the small, intentional connections that can turn even the most mundane gatherings into lasting memories.

They believe that bringing people together, even in simple ways, can have a real impact on the local community. 

What really sets Makai Events apart is their personal touch.

Mandy and Shea take the time to get to know each client and make sure every event feels unique and tailored to their vision. When they understand what is important to the client, they can make sure every gathering, big or small, feels unique and meaningful.

For them, hosting is about more than just logistics; it’s about creating spaces where people can relax, celebrate, and genuinely enjoy being together. 

Makai’s first Moments Market was held on May 25, featuring more than 20 vendors, live music, food, a petting zoo and plenty of ways for the community to come together.

Looking ahead, Mandy and Shea are excited for new collaborations, such as their Yoga Salt event on July 26. 

With Makai Events, Mandy and Shea want to intentionally build community.

They are all about building relationships, supporting local businesses and creating space for real connections in Wilmington.
