Located two miles west of Highway 17 in Hampstead is a true Scottish style links course, Castle Bay Country Club. The course is a 20-minute drive from either Wrightsville Beach or Topsail Island and just a 10-minute drive from Figure Eight Island.

Castle Bay’s 18-hole, par 72 course features five tee boxes, well placed bunkers, numerous ponds and other hazards that make club selection particularly important.

The fairways are reasonably wide, but golfers will be punished for errant shots since the hazards can gobble up stray golf balls.

The course also has acres of ever-changing, beautiful wetlands (unless you’re in them) and wonderfully true greens, which many consider the best in Pender County.

Castle Bay Country Club is semi-private and has a fully stocked pro shop with a staff that is knowledgeable about what clubs would help a player’s game. The owner of the facility is an avid golfer himself and, partially as a result of that, sees that the course is in great shape year-round.

Players can hone their skills or warm up for a round on the driving range. They can also sharpen their short games by utilizing the putting green or by hitting to a separate green from the sand trap and chipping areas.

Castle Bay’s pro shop is located in a castle, albeit a new one, and there is a shaded patio overlooking the course for relaxing after the round. Golf tournaments and outings are welcome.
