Without question, New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) in Wilmington is the cornerstone and leader when it comes to providing a comprehensive and sophisticated array of services. For close to 50 years, NHRMC has served the residents of southeastern North Carolina and beyond. A tertiary referral center, NHRMC provides a broad range of medical specialties with some of the state’s finest physicians, nurses and staff.
NHRMC includes the main 17th Street campus, NHRMC Orthopedic Hospital on Wrightsville Avenue and the management of Pender Memorial Hospital in Burgaw. NHRMC also provides Emergency Medical Services (EMS), critical care ground and air transport through VitaLink and AirLink, services through Health & Diagnostic Centers and outpatient rehabilitation. Through the NHRMC Physician Group, NHRMC provides primary care, specialty services and urgent care throughout the region. NHRMC is also affiliated with NHRMC Home Care, adding another dimension to the closely coordinated services that help provide more seamless, high-quality care from physician office to hospital to home.
New Hanover Regional Medical Center is the ninth-largest healthcare system in the state and the largest employer in the region, with a dedicated team of about 6,000 employees, 560 physicians and 760 active volunteers. As a public, not-for-profit hospital, NHRMC offers care to everyone who needs it, regardless of ability to pay. On an annual basis, NHRMC provides more than $145 million in charitable and uncompensated care to the community. Its volunteer board of trustees is appointed by New Hanover County Commissioners with representation from Pender County. NHRMC receives no local tax support for its day-to-day operations.

New Hanover Regional Medical Center has been recognized for the quality and safety of its patient care by The Joint Commission, which named New Hanover Regional Medical Center a 2013 Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care. NHRMC was ranked as one of the 2013 and 2014 HealthStrong™ Hospitals in the United States, a top hospital delivering better care, higher quality and lower costs than 99 percent of rated U.S. hospitals.
NHRMC is a teaching hospital and regional referral center. As the tertiary care center for a seven-county area, the medical center offers specialty medical and surgical care. It is one of nine trauma centers in the state certified at Level II or above. Other specialty services include: four adult intensive care units, neonatal and pediatric intensive care, neurosurgery, pediatric surgery, open heart surgery, vascular surgery and oncology services.
In addition to advanced medicine and exceptional staff, NHRMC offers a beautiful environment for patients to receive care and heal. The hospital expanded in recent years with the addition of a 186,500-square-foot Surgical Pavilion and the 150-bed Betty H. Cameron Women’s & Children’s Hospital.
The hospital’s patient tower has also been renovated, including private rooms, all-new interiors, a soothing and quiet design, room for family, and access to caregivers who are never far from the patient’s room.
